Once it is determined that a patient will benefit from voice treatment, the patient and caregiver participate in an orientation session. It is important that each patient/caregiver understand the treatment schedule and what is expected with regards to daily vocal exercises.
The anatomy and physiology of the speech and swallowing mechanism will be explained, and patients will begin to learn about the sensory disorder that accompanies Parkinsons and its affect on the voice. Patients will be instructed on how to maintain good vocal hygiene.
Patients are given a Parkinson Voice Project treatment tote which contains the supplies needed to help a patient improve their voice: a treatment binder, a digital sound level meter, and a tripod. Patients will utilize this equipment during their daily vocal practice during voice treatment and beyond. There is no charge to the patient for this equipment ($125 value).
Patients and caregivers will be given a tour of the Parkinson Voice Project facility, including the library, which contains over one hundred books about Parkinson disease.
